Summer Reading Brochure - 2007 Congratulations Spartanburg High School Varsity Swim Coach, John Wolfe, Jr. Named Coach of the Year The Varsity Swimming Coach at Spartanburg High School, John Wolfe, has been named the South Carolina Swimming Coach of the Year by the South Carolina High School League for 2006-2007, thereby making him eligible for the National Swimming Coach of the Year Award. Mr. Wolfe was instrumental in reviving the swimming program at Spartanburg High School in 1997, at which time he became head coach. Since assuming the mantle of leadership, John has been honored for his coaching excellence in various venues, including Region II AAAA Coach of the Year for the last six years, and High School Sports Report’s Swim Coach of the Year in 2000. During his tenure his teams have earned four AAAA State Championships and seven Region II AAAA Championships. Mr. Wolfe has been at Spartanburg High School for 33 years, serving as a guidance counselor since 1979. John (Bubba) Wolfe’s three-plus decades at the high school have enriched numerous generations of students through his skills as a teacher, counselor, and mentor. His crowning achievement is that his swimmers not only have a superb athletic record, but also an excellent academic record. We salute one of District 7’s finest professionals! The College Board reported that the Senior Class of 2007 at Spartanburg High School had an average composite SAT score of 1020, a 22-point increase from the previous year. Spartanburg High seniors exceeded both the state and national average of 984 and 1017, respectively. In addition, the high school had the highest percentage of students who took the test in Spartanburg County. Spartanburg High School’s composite average was higher than 82% of the high schools in South Carolina, and the percentage tested was higher than the average percentage for the state as a whole. Moreover, Spartanburg School District 7 was one of seven school districts (out of 85), and Spartanburg High School was one in 32 schools (out of over 200) distinguished by the South Carolina State Department as meeting or exceeding the national mean composite score in critical reading, mathematics, and writing. Nan McDaniel, Director of Secondary Instructionm, said, “We are so proud of our students and faculty for this accomplishment,” McDaniel stated. “It means so much when students and teachers work from the eighth grade on to improve scores and see results.” "We are always proud to see positive trends in test scores and especially in SAT results, since those scores are highly visible in the community.” Al Jeter, Director of Instruction, Testing and Accountability said. “We share our families' pride in their students' accomplishments, and we also recognize the efforts of the entire District 7 family in the preparation that students receive." The District Office congratulates the entire team at the high school, including Principal Rodney Graves and his dedicated guidance staff. Summer Reading National columnist Kathleen Parker wrote an article about the summer reading program at Spartanburg High School. To quote a few lines from her column: "few places in the nation are doing more to advance literacy than this historic textile-mill town, where books are free and reading is rewarded ..... The immeasurable reward of Spartanburg's program is familiar to all readers -- discovery of new worlds and insights that otherwise might be unavailable. This is especially true for the Internet/iPod generation, for whom information and entertainment are passively received with the click of a button." Read the complete article at http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/opinion/views/orl-parker2907aug29,0,5555870.column Contest 3rd Annual Chapbook Contest Call for Manuscripts: USC's South Carolina Poetry Initiative Chapbook Contest Date: July 20th thru September 30th, 2007 Guidelines for submitting manuscripts are as follows: 1. Chapbook manuscripts should be between 20 and 28 pages. 2. Individual poems within the manuscript may have been published in literary magazines, but may not have been published together as a book or chapbook. 3. A non-refundable entry/reading fee of $15 must be included. 4. There must be two title pages: one with the title of the manuscript and the names of the first three poems, plus the poet’s name, address, and email address; the second should be identical but should not include the poet’s name or address. 5. The poet’s name must not appear on any page of the actual manuscript. 6. The poet must own the copyright to the work or be able to secure permission to reprint any copyrighted poem. 7. The winning poet must be able to submit a copy of the poems on disk to the South Carolina Poetry Initiative. 8. SASE, for notification only, must be included with submission. Manuscripts will not be returned. 9. Entries will be accepted between July 20th and September 30th, of 2007. 10. Entries postmarked later than September 30th, 2007 will not be considered. 11. The winners will be announced at an Award Ceremony at the Columbia Museum of Art on the evening of October 6th. 12. At least five manuscripts will be selected for chapbook publication. 13. At least ten poets will be selected for web-publication. (Five to ten poems, biographical data, and photo will be tastefully featured on the Poetry Initiative Website) 14. Previous winners should not submit manuscripts for a period of two years. 15. Contest is open to writers who are 18 years or older. 16.
